Artist Statement 2023

Emily M. Hopkins’ abstract intuitive paintings have an immediate bold impression on the viewer through gesture, richness of color, and symbolism. The spaces she creates in her paintings are meant to be pointing to a non-verbal experience of presence. Since moving to the Coast of Maine full-time in 2004 from NYC, her exhibitions include a one-person show at The Yellow Shed, Rockland in July 2016 and showings at Carver Hill Gallery, Leighton Gallery, Husson College Gallery, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, The Granite Gallery, June Hopkins Gallery and River Arts. Hopkins studied Anatomy at RISD, attended The Art Institute of Chicago, Art Student's League, and a Summer art residency in Venice, Italy and is a graduate of the Pratt Institute (BFA). e Art Institute of Chicago, Art Student's League, and a Summer art residency in Venice, Italy and is a graduate of the Pratt Institute (BFA).

Adele Drake grew up in Philadelphia and attended classes at the Barnes Foundation, Moore College of Art (art teacher certification), Gettysburg College (BA) and the University of Pennsylvania( MFA). Currently she is teaching visual arts at Hampden Academy while taking courses at the University of Maine’s Intermedia Department. Drake moved to Maine in 2002 and has spent many years making oil paintings of the Maine Landscape. In addition to painting Drake continues to explore the materials and methods found in an intermedial approach to making art. Adele has also taught art in Maine and Pennsylvania Public Schools as well as Waterfall Arts and Husson University. She has participated in group shows in Rockland, Maine, the Zillman Art Museum in Bangor Maine and at the Maine Farmland Trust gallery in Belfast, Maine

In recent works she explores her relationship with the landscape and thinks of the creation of her paintings as a form of reciprocity with nature. The paintings encourage the viewers to adopt a practice of biophilic attention that will deepen, heal and repair their connection to life.
