Raymond Mathis

Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Thomaston Maine metalsmith Raymond Mathis began exploring his craft when he worked as a farrier, using the fire in the back of his truck to create his first pieces of art. He moved into his first studio in 1988 creating work from his original designs using centuries-old techniques. In 1994 Mathis honed his skills at the Vulkanschmiede and the International Teaching Center for Metal Design in Aachen, Germany while researching the iron craftsmanship throughout Europe. His projects range from sculpture, interior and exterior furnishings and installations to commercial signage and liturgical work. In addition to receiving multiple awards in juried exhibitions and for historic preservation, his work has been featured in national and regional shelter publications.
